LONDON, December 2012 –As part of National Smile Month (the British Dental Health Foundation’s annual campaign to remind people of the importance of oral health routines), the UK leading charity published last spring the results of a study on how negligence on oral hygiene affects the country’s economy. As stated on the report, government statistics show that 25% of adults in UK haven’t visited a dentist in the past two years and only brush their teeth once a day. The results of these poor oral health habits are alarming, as one in every ten adults suffer from regular tooth pain and decay, which directly affect noxiously the productivity of UK economy. Records show that over two million people in the county took time off due to dental problems in the past five years. These also show how most of these teeth and gums conditions were completely preventable with a good oral hygiene routine. Clear braces and teeth straightening surgery not only correct misalignment and malocclusion problems to help patients achieve a more attractive and pleasantly aesthetic look. These treatments also ensure better oral health standards as aligning teeth helps patients easily reach all the areas that must be cleaned with every brushing and flossing. As pointed out by Perfect Smile professional dentists, they also ensure a proper bite and the right force distribution and wear patterns on teeth, which prevents from erosion, early decay and tooth loss. Oral health is not only essential to prevent unwanted dental problems after receiving orthodontic treatments, but particularly when being under any kind of dental procedure. Brackets and wires may difficult it, as well as sensitivity after laser whitening teeth procedures or during the healing stage in dental implants; however, it is all the more important in those cases to prevent further and more severe problems as well as to ensure the success and benefits of those treatments. While as much as a 7% of UK’s 29 million workers have called sick with teeth problems at least once in the past five years, this figure is likely to arise provided that many people is still unaware that poor oral habits contribute to hazard their general health, increasing the risk of acute health conditions such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes. The fact that more common causes of sick leave overshadow these numbers, as showed in British Dental Health Foundation’s report, contributes to this general unawareness. For that reason, their annual National Smile Month is committed to divulge the three key recommendations for a good oral health: brushing and flossing a minimum of twice a day, cutting down on the frequency of sugary food and drinks, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis. Negligence in oral health not only hazards individual wellbeing, but also causes great damage to UK’s economy.
