The need for maritime training is one of the most important mandates in the maritime sector. A large part of these actions, in close collaboration with the maritime training institute, provides most sought by marine crew training. It also happens that some courses are taught by other schools. As regards the crew, there are two broad categories of training for adults: regulated training and refresher training. Regulated Training

This training follows from the application of a regulation that a worker must be followed in order to perform the job for which training is required. For example, to work as a deckhand on a ship registered in Canada, it is mandatory to have completed the course in Marine Emergency Function II (MED II) not later than six months after being hired. In most cases, employers require that the worker has already taken this course before hiring.

Refresher Training

This training is available to maritime workers and allows them to obtain a Certificate of Competency, e.g. Transportation of Petroleum Products ( TMPP ) or patent superior officer such as Master Mariner .

In addition to college programs in maritime navigation, marine engineering, naval architecture, transport logistics and diving, the maritime training institute also provides good number of adult courses for the development of maritime personnel.

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance exists for both types of adult training ( regulated and development ) programs of financial assistance that people who enroll may be eligible if they meet certain conditions. There is a Committee which is responsible for managing these programs in collaboration with schools and departments concerned.

Other Training

Maritime training is not only limited to crew members. The need for training is very important in the administrative staff of companies (ship owners, ports, stevedoring companies, etc. . .) For example, in recent years, new requirements for safety (protection against acts of terrorism or criminal) have led to new training skills that are specific to the non-flying personnel. Job Training and Skills Development

The marine industry in general has to deal with ever increasing demands in regard to regulations, quality standards as well as technological changes. To be able to cope with these issues and so stand out from the competition, companies must rely on qualified and competent staff on ships and in administrative offices in the ports. In a context of scarcity of skilled personnel, an effective solution that will contribute to the renewal of their human resources such as on-the-job training would be preferable.

Maritime companies require a Job Training and Skills Development Guide for the skill development of their crew members. It contains information on the importance and relevance of training in employment, support organizations as well as support programs for maritime companies and their employees.
