PRESS: STUDY REVEALS ONGOING EDUCATIONAL GAPS AMONG HEALTH SYSTEM PHARMACISTS

Surprising Survey Results Indicate Evolving Preferences for Continuing Education Topics
Date Released: 10/21/2010
Millstone Township, NJ (October 21, 2010) – Pharmacy Learning Network® (PLN), a division of North American Center for Continuing Medical Education (NACCME), announces the results of its 2010 nationwide survey. A total of 1094 pharmacy learners participated in the 2010 PLN Survey, making it one of the largest annual instruments of its kind designed to identify educational gaps and needs.

In the survey, health systems pharmacists were asked to rate the educational value of a variety of healthcare topics. The 2010 PLN Survey respondents scored diabetes the highest, followed by antibiotic stewardship, MRSA, pain, and venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Diabetes has made a steady rise in importance with the audience on the annual survey, but 2010 marks the first time the topic received the highest rating by respondents. PLN faculty member, Randolph V. Fugit, PharmD, BCPS, Internal Medicine Clinical Specialist at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Pharmacy Practice at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center says, “Considering the ever-changing diabetes management landscape, coupled with increased pharmacotherapy responsibilities on the part of the health-system pharmacist, it is very clear from these data that pharmacists are looking for the best evidence-based continuing education opportunities to increase their knowledge and understanding of the treatment this very important topic.”

The 2010 PLN Survey delves deeper into each therapeutic area of interest as well. For instance, learners rated the following VTE sub-topics in order of highest value: 1. Translating guidelines to practice 2. Preventive therapy 3. Patient risk stratification 4. Surgical versus medical considerations 5. Hospital discharge protocol for follow-up management

Stephen Chavez, Senior Director of Educational Services says the survey points to educational gaps as well. “The findings on VTE are in alignment with other data that demonstrate that learners continue to fall short of VTE guidelines, despite educational efforts.” The 2010 PLN Survey findings, says Mr. Chavez, “highlight the need for translational and reinforcement tools such as risk calculators and order change forms in our curriculum.”
