Author and attorney Alan B. Katz is not ready to stand up and cheer about the prospect of democracy in Egypt. Katz, who has written books focused on the media’s perception of the Middle East Crisis says, “There are too many unanswered questions, especially regarding what role the new Egyptian government will have in stabilizing peace in the region with Israel.”
Katz penned two compelling books including For the Record Israel & The Palestinians: What the Media Aren’t Telling You (Devora, 2008) in which he humanizes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to show the sacrifices, pain and courage of the Israelis, and exposes the hypocrisy of the media and the true nature of the Palestinians. In both his books, Katz defends Israel’s right to defend itself from aggression and sets the record straight in relation to the media’s portrayal of Israel and the Jewish state’s conflict with its Palestinian neighbors.
Now Katz is focusing his attention on the prospects for peace in the region following the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. According to Katz, “Despite his questionable rule, Mubarak was an ally to the United States and was responsible for maintaining stability between Israel and Egypt. With his departure and great uncertainty as to who will comprise the new Egyptian government, we should be concerned about the safety of Israel and her people.”
Katz acknowledges that to some degree the revolution in Egypt which led to the overthrow of the Mubarak regime was orchestrated by young, educated Egyptians who believed that Mubarak was a dictator who suppressed freedom of expression and real democracy. However, he cautions that “there is too much uncertainty about who is in charge within the Egyptian military and has concerns about what influence the Muslim Brotherhood will have in rebuilding Egypt.”
Katz points out that “although the Egyptian military has expressed that the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaties will be honored no one knows for how long. There is a question about the military and who will be in power.” The author cautions the U.S. and our allies “to monitor the rebuilding of Egypt’s government carefully and to keep a strong focus on the needs of Israel because stability in the region can only be achieved if the peace treaties are respected.”
